MANUEL GODOY,
THE PEACE PRINCE
On the occasion of the "Bicentenary of 1808", the wax sculpture of Manuel Godoy, Prime Minister with King Carlos IV and known as "Príncipe de la Paz" (Peace Prince), was presented in the Madrid Wax Museum. The act was held on the 12 th of May in the morning, the day that the 241 st anniversary of this enlightened politician's birth was commemorated, and gathered a large group of prestigious historians specialized in Godoy, such as Carlos Seco (member of The History Academy), Alfonso Bullón, Emilio La Parra, Luis Alfonso Limpo, Alberto González (chronicler of the town of Badajoz), José Luis Lindo (chronicler of the town of Aranjuez), and the philosopher and historian Enrique Rúspoli, who is, besides, Manuel Godoy's direct descendant.
All of them highlighted how important was for Spain the politician from Extremadura, whose work and path have been twisted along many years, and the appropiateness of this presentation in the Wax Museum, coinciding with the unveiling of a dedicated monument in his home town Badajoz, whose Council has officially asked the move of Godoy's mortal remains from Paris, where he died in 1851. |

1808-2008 BICENTENARY OF THE SPANISH INDEPENDENCE WAR
All the main protagonist of the most outstanding anniversary of the year in Spain are represented in the showrooms of the Wax Museum in Madrid.
The Kings of Spain, Carlos IV and his son Fernando VII; his opponent the Emperor of France Napoleon I; the painter Francisco de Goya, including the three-dimensional recreation of one of his most tragic and spectacular works, "Los fusilamientos de la montaña del Principe Pío" (Shootings in the Principe Pío Mountain), painting about which the brilliant painter himself, when he requested help to the Regency Council for executing it, wrote that "intended to perpetuate by means of the paintbrush the most remarkable and heroic acts and episodes of our proud rising against the tyrant of Europe..."
In the dramatic darkness of that night full of blood and gunpowder, a lantern illuminates the execution of the patriots of Madrid and, glowing in the tragic darkness, the white shirt of the victim in the middle, with his arms up in front of the French riflemen, gets to the observer as a paradigmatic, descriptive and plastic accusation of war brutality.
The Madrid Wax Museum shows to all his visitors the protagonists in their historic scenes and the most important facts that the popular rising in 1808 brought along, adhering to the commemorations of the bicentenary that will be held all around Spain in 2008. |
